Conference attendees may pay an additional fee of $35 to receive a formal, one-on-one critique during the conference. You send a complete manuscript of a picture book, the first 3 chapters and a synopsis of a longer work (not to exceed 20 pages), or an entire short story or easy reader, or a collection of several poems. Conference speakers, and other published authors do critiques.
Manuscripts for formal critiques must be received by the deadline (Sept 18) so that they can be forwarded to the critiquer to read ahead of time. Mail to PO Box 26282, Birmingham, AL 35260. The critiquer will make notes to bring to the critique. The critiquer will then meet privately with you for 12 minutes to discuss the work. This is not a time to defend your work. Please practice the etiquette of the professional that you are. Listen and learn.
Manuscripts must be properly formatted to be critiqued. Refer to the SCBWI publication, From Keyboard to Printed Page, available on the website, www.scbwi.org, under "Publications."
Due to the limited number of critique slots, manuscripts for formal critique are selected on a first come first serve bases. Mss sent in, but not critiqued, will be returned to the author at the conference with a refund of the critique fee.
Do not mail portfolios. Illustrators are to bring portfolios the day of conference. Illustrators will be assigned an appointment time, at which your critiquer will meet privately with you for 12 minutes to discuss the work. This is not a time to defend your work. Please practice the etiquette of the professional that you are. Listen and learn.
Manuscripts that arrive after the deadline, and mss that are not properly formatted will not be critiqued. Mss that arrive after all available critique slots are filled will not be critiqued (this often occurs before the deadline). So to assure a critique, you should register early. Mss sent in, but not critiqued, will be returned to the author at the conference with a refund of the critique fee.
Portfolios should contain several pieces of art that show versatility and uniqueness of the artist’s style and strengths. If illustrator doesn’t have a portfolio, a book dummy, and or sketches / 3-5 pieces of artwork are okay.
Attendees may bring several copies of a manuscript for informal critiques. Those interested in participating will break into small groups in which they will read each other’s work and make suggestions to strengthen the manuscripts.
