Fall Conference

Writing and Illustrating for Kids '07
16th Annual Fall Conference
October 20, 2007
Birmingham, AL

Spain Park High School

It's been said that 80% of your next success is showing up, so join us at WIK07 and perhaps you'll only have 20% to go!

Keynote Speaker Larry Rosler (Editorial Director, Boyds Mills Press) will inspire us to remember that "Writing is Believing" and discuss imagination and picture books.

Mark McVeigh (Editorial Director, Aladdin Paperbacks, Simon & Schuster) will clarify acquisitions and how big publishers operate. Edward Necarsulmer IV (Director of the Children's Department, McIntosh & Otis) will illuminate the art of the query and an agent's role. Elizabeth Parisi (Executive Art Director, Hardcover, Scholastic) will illustrate great book design and the all-important cover.

From England, hear Lionel Bender (Editorial Partner, Bender Richardson White/UK) demystify book packagers. Mary Ann Rodman (author of picture books and novels) will explain description and school visits. Dianne Hamilton (Senior Editor, OnStage Publishing) will offer tips toward a professional career.

Presentations by authors Lynn Cullen (historical fiction), Susan Rosson Spain (voice), and Mary Ann Taylor (mysteries) - together with advice on promotion from Robert Kittinger (web 2.0) and Shelli Johannes-Wells (marketing) - round out a full slate of 29 workshops for the beginner to the award-winner. Plus, be a "fly on the wall" as Mark and Edward negotiate a mock contract for all to see.

Will a dessert schmooze with faculty; workshop; autographed book; door prize; critique of your manuscript, portfolio, or marketing package; or new friend be the passport to your success? Register early! Show up and find out!

Note: Our previously announced keynote speaker, Paul Fleischman, had to postpone his visit to Birmingham, but will be joining us at a later date.

Hester Bass, Fall Conference Coordinator

Something New: A Marketing Package Review!

You've had your manuscript or portfolio critiqued, but what about the
materials you use to market yourself to editors, agents, teachers,
librarians, and readers?

Now, you can get a critique of your marketing materials with our own
Southern Breeze member and marketing consultant, Shelli Johannes-
Wells of bilan, inc.(www.bilaninc.com)

Critiques of your Marketing Package are available for $40 each.
Shelli will review your "collateral" – brochure, business card, web

In each formal Marketing Package Review, you'll receive a written
critique and meet with Shelli for 15 minutes to discuss and
brainstorm ways to maximize the effectiveness of your marketing.

Learn how to sell yourself "the write way". Sign up in advance on the
registration form for a personalized Marketing Package Review!

To request a marketing package review, check the appropriate box on your registration; include the $40 fee; and send any business card, brochure, biography, etc. that you use, together with print-outs of your web pages, to arrive no later than September 15, to:
