Friday Night

The Friday night dinner allowed us to catch up with old friends and make new friends. Literary quotes at each place setting, set the tone for a great weekend.
 Joan Broerman, along with last year's book basket winner, Bob Whetstone, encourage attendees to contribute books to the basket.  Regional Advisor, Mary Ann Taylor, welcomes attendees from seven states.
Yvonne Rogers, purchaser for the children's department at Lemuria Books, talked about "A Book for Every Buyer."  


Saturday Morning

Paula Morrow, Editor at Cricket Books as well as Ladybug and Babybug magazines, told us the difference between "Good versus Great" manuscripts. H. Emerson Blake, Editor-in-Chief at Milkweed Editions, shared his passion for children's books in his talk entitled, "Can Children's Literature Save the World?"
Emerson Blake had the crowd mesmerized with examples of fine
literature.
 


 Saturday Lunch

Saturday lunch provided an opportunity to get to know the editors.

 Saturday Afternoon

Joy Neaves, Editor at Front Street, Inc., continued a program of excellence with "Forging Identity: The Art of the Young Adult Novel." Valerie Valentine, Editor at Llewellyn Worldwide, reminded us to "Show, Don't Tell: Writing Catchy Prose to Catch an Editor's Eye."


 Formal and Informal Critiques

Critiques provided constructive criticism and solid direction for improving both art and manuscripts.

Editor Joy Neaves offers a critique. Art Director Loraine Joyner points out strengths and weaknesses in artwork.

Others available to sign books included Joan Broerman, Aileen Henderson, Jo Kittinger, G. Mark LaFrancis, Mary Ann Rodman, and Bettye Stroud.


Saturday Night

After dinner Saturday night, Loraine Joyner, Art Director at Peachtree Publishing, shared unique aspects of picture book art in her talk, "Once Upon a Picture: The Illustrator as Storyteller."


Sunday Morning

Judy Zylstra, Editor-in-Chief at Eerdman's Books for Young Readers, brought the audience to tears with her talk, "What's a Child to Do in a World Like This?"


Panel Discussion

Springmingle'05 attendees got one last chance to have their questions answered during a panel discussion with our faculty.
