FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES



Claudia Gabel
joined Delacorte Press in November 2005 as an Editor after two years in children's book packaging and four years in adult publishing. Her editorial interests are varied, but she's always looking for a distinctive, unforgettable narrative voice. Her specialty is commercial fiction, including sweet but sexy contemporary romances, sweeping historical epics, thrilling whodunits, and chilling horror novels. She is currently seeking literary titles to add to her list, especially ones that deal with identity and multicultural issues. Her most well-known projects are the bestselling Summer Boys series and the critically acclaimed Midnighters books. She lives in New York City.

 

Gretchen Hirsch is an Assistant Editor at Harcourt Children's Books, where she works on all genres and age ranges. She recently relocated to New York from Harcourt's San Diego office, and previously she was a children's department manager at Barnes & Noble. Gretchen is looking for fresh and funny picture books and novels, historical fiction, and innovative nonfiction for all ages. Attendees at a New Mexico conference in April, found her to be, "informative, funny, entertaining, clear, and generally 'excellent!'" Best of all, after the Albuquerque conference, she bought two picture books by a previously unpublished author/illustrator!

 

Michelle Poploff works at Random House Children's Books, where she is Vice President & Editorial Director for the Yearling (middle grade) and Laurel Leaf (young adult) paperback publishing program, in addition to serving as Executive Editor for the Delacorte Press imprint. She is actively seeking top drawer middle grade and young adult manuscripts in the following genres: contemporary and historical fiction, humor, mystery, edgy young adult and commercial fiction. She is also the author of a several early chapter books.

 

 

Barbara Seuling is the author and/or illustrator of more than 60 books for children. In addition to Oh, No, It's Robert and several sequels (chapter books illustrated by Paul Brewer) she has written many picture books, including Whose House? illustrated by Kay Chorao, Spring Song and Winter Lullaby, illustrated by Greg Newbold, Drip! Drop! and Flick a Switch!, illustrated by Nancy Tobin, and From Head to Toe: The Amazing Human Body and How It Works, illustrated by Ed Miller. For adults, she has written How to Write a Children's Book and Get It Published.

Barbara was a children's book editor with Delacorte Press and Yearling Books, and with J. B. Lippincott Co., but is now a full time writer. For five months of the year, she lives in a cottage in Landgrove, Vermont, while the rest are spent in the city of her birth and heart, New York City. In addition to writing and illustrating, she directs the Manuscript Workshop in Vermont during the summer. Barbara has taught children's writing in this country, in Moscow, and in Budapest.

 

Elizabeth Dulemba will facilitate our Formal Portfolio Critiques. After receiving her BFA in Graphic Design from the University of GA, Elizabeth spent 15-years as a graphic designer, Art Director, and in-house illustrator mostly for child-related businesses. In August 2001 she turned her attention to children's book illustration and currently has three books available: Glitter Girl and the Crazy Cheese; The Prince's Diary, named Number One 2006 Valentine's Day Pick by Book Sense; and Haley and the Big Blast.
