Southern Breeze Newsletter

Our regional newsletter, the eponymous "Southern Breeze News," (SBN) contains exclusive market tips, publishing news, business and craft tips, success stories, event information, and more.

We are happy to be able to send our bi-annual newsletter free to all regional members of SCBWI. Many people outside our region also enjoy attending our events, and reading our newsletter, so subscriptions are available: $8.00 per year (for two issues). You may subscribe for more than one year at a time. To subscribe, send your check to:

Southern Breeze
PO Box 26282
Birmingham, AL 35260

Subscriptions received by November will begin with the winter issue, which includes information and registration materials for our Springmingle Conference. New subscriptions received by July will begin with the summer issue, which includes information and registration materials for our fall WIK Conference.

Soaring Successes Submission Format
Authors and/or Illustrators Books or Magazines:
Your Name, TITLE OF BOOK or MAGAZINE/"Article Title"/"Poem"/"Short Story" (Publisher, date to be published), if picture book, name author & illustrator.

Awards & Achievements:
Your name, TITLE (Publisher, publication date) award or achievement.

Contract/Sale Credits:
Associate members' first contract/sale credit has priority printing in each
issue; first-come, first-served. Associate members will become full members after their first contract/sale.

Full members' contract/sale credits will also now be included on a first-come, first-served basis, after the associate member credits, and as space allows.

Published Credits:
Full member credits should be listed when work appears in their publishers' catalogue and will soon be on the shelves (to give your book timely publicity) - again, first-come, first-served, as space allows.

Which Credits are Publishable?
Children's Genre: All credits listed in the Successes column are for children's books, magazines, videos, CDs, etc. Adult credits are not listed as there are many organizations that list adult publishing credits. Some, such as Authors Guild, publish both genres. SBN focuses on the children's market.

However, articles or illustrations for the adult genre are permissible when a tie can be made to kids. Children's market guides or family publications, which of course include kids' issues and entertainment, are acceptable.

Traditional Publishers
To conform with the professional standards of SCBWI, we no longer list print-on-demand or self-published books in the Soaring Successes column, unless they meet the SCBWI criteria for Full Member qualifications which is sales of at least 1,000 copies. Traditionally published books have top priority.

Protect Yourself
If a SCBWI, Southern Breeze member is contacted by an unfamiliar publisher or agency, obtain as much information about them as you can. Ask publishers for a catalog, who distributes their books, and in what bookstores you can find them. Ask agencies which authors and illustrators they represent, what published books they have placed and with which publishers. Legitimate businesses will respond without hesitation. SCBWI recommends that members be wary of publishers who hold out the promise of publication provided the writer works with a specified literary agent, or asks for a fee. The SCBWI membership list is for members only. Use of our roster to solicit manuscript submissions is entirely unauthorized.

Publishing Rights

Team Builders
The Southern Breeze newsletter and website allow each of us to learn from members across our unique tri-state region. Much like the children we write and illustrate for, we're constantly evolving, striving to sharpen our skills as well as the knowledge base of our craft. We appreciate your input into the newsletter and website, and welcome comments or suggestions.

Thanks to everyone who helps us bring it all together!
